Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Wrapped Reichstag (1995)

Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s Wrapped Reichstag temporarily erased the famous landmark for two weeks in 1995. For their piece Wrapped Reichstag artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude covered the German landmark with 100,000 square metres of billowing silver-grey fabric, tied by over fifteen kilometres of blue ropes – for two weeks only. Christo compared the temporary nature of the wrapped Reichstag to the tents used by nomadic tribesmen, quickly erected and equally quickly removed, and to the transience of life itself. ‘It is a kind of naiveté and arrogance’, he commented, ‘to think that this thing stays forever, for eternity. All these projects have this strong dimension of missing, of self-effacement … they will go away, like our childhood, our life. They create a tremendous intensity when they are there for a few days. #installation
