The Jagged Drama of Clyfford Still’s Paintings

Sotheby’s Chairman Lisa Dennison explores the striking forms and chromatic intensity and of Clyfford Still’s PH144 (1947-Y-No.1). With its forceful combination of deep black, bright yellow and crimson red, this monumental work embodies everything that Still stood for as an artist and was notably selected by Still himself for inclusion in his seminal 1959 exhibition Paintings by Clyfford Still.

"We wanted to create a record using samples from recordings we created ourselves that were calm, romantic and had a natural, timeless feel. Something weathered and low-fi, but Hi-Fi and complete all at the same time. Something with the spirit of a well-loved worn-out cassette but using cutting edge production techniques. Hiss, noise and distortion are all treated here as instruments in these compositions. Asking the questions "What is quality, perfection and character and what do these words mean to us". We took our own recordings and manipulated them, letting them evolve through the technology, reflecting the cyclical and evolutionary nature of all creative processes."

Cédric Kouassi Tchinan

Cédric Kouassi Tchinan is an artist based in the Ivory Coast whose paintings have been exhibited nationally. His vivid optical art-inspired works speak of the spirit and of reflection. In addition, Tchinan explores themes relating to "odyssey", which represents our life journeys. He believes that although the path is difficult, it can also be viewed as a game that we can learn valuable lessons from.

Lee Lozano with Dr Jo Applin

Jo Applin gives an insight into both Lee Lozano’s life and her work, contextualizing her practice and highlighting her response to the constraints of constitutional systems, gender dynamics, power, money, and politics. Created in 1962–1963, the early paintings and drawings on view at Hauser & Wirth Somerset use airplanes as a central image and can be considered as examples of the artist’s passionate exploration of creative energy in its purist form. This focused body of early work exposes a complex and deeply intimate inner life grappling with one-sided gender and societal dichotomies, while other works display a form of ferocious humour and playfulness, exploiting the rhetoric of exaggeration to its most cogent effect. Her raw expressionist brush strokes create powerful works imbued with a very personal iconography, including genitals, religious symbols, tools and body parts. Lozano’s short lived but influential career remains a source of fascination, lauded by Lucy Lippard as the foremost female conceptual artist of her era in New York.

To celebrate the publication of The Films of Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné, 1963–1965, Volume 2, this program illuminates Andy Warhol’s practice as a filmmaker, exploring the relationship between his films and his work in other media, and the importance of his films to twentieth-century art history. John G. Hanhardt, general editor of The Films of Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné, 1963–1965, and former Curator and Head of Film and Video at the Whitney, will be joined by film scholar Bruce Jenkins and filmmaker Tom Kalin, contributors to the catalogue raisonné, to speak about the history of Warhol’s engagement with cinema and to share insights into why Warhol's films have been influential for generations of artists while also remaining largely unknown until now.

The Emotion Industry is the pairs audio visual comment on the modern digital landscape and its influence - “There is an unfathomable power to blur reality as we know it. The ability to discern what’s real and what’s not is becoming increasingly difficult - social media super computers using data points to push your buttons for manufacturing consent, Ai articles and deep fake images add to the illusion. The ability too really ‘see’ the objective reality of what’s been created is the new enlightenment” We aim to use the most modern cutting edge techniques available to us. Sometimes embracing the errors and inconsistencies in the knowledge that when the “bugs” are ironed out and the tech made smooth these errors will be lost forever. Capturing the spaces in between advancement is an essential archive to advancement. Yesterday’s idiosyncrasies are today’s nostalgia. MAFF Premiere: FLUTTER

Flutter is an experimental ambient track for acoustic cello and electronics by MIZU, from her upcoming album Forest Scenes - releasing 3/22. “Flutter” celebrates and juxtaposes themes of exploration within constraint, limitlessness within seeming limits, and the resilience of independent voices against unknown textures. Exploring the dynamics between contrasting elements (symbolized by the characters of White and Black), within the atmospheric presence of a cello, we embark on a quest for understanding through movement and performance. Embodied by two queer Asian performers, the journey is an ode to self-acceptance and transformation. A lone cello, elevated to the status of a spiritual object, acts as a silent witness and catalyst, summoning the protagonists together within a mysterious void space. In the later shift to the reality world, we are revealed to be within an empty rehearsal studio, where the characters’ movements echo from prior, reaching for an ever unattainable ideal. The void space and its real-world parallel become a figurative forest, spaces for exploration of self through elements of performance and movement. The video charts the personal connections to performance of both protagonists; MIZU’s musical origins lying within the realms of musical theater, and Zhou’s current experimental practice being rooted within their drama background. Sugar Walls Teardom

Tabita Rezaire researches technology politics, the legacies of colonialism, and methods of self-actualization by connecting ancient knowledge systems with new technologies and quantum physics through, among others, spiritual technologies such as Kemetic yoga and sound healing. In her installation Sugar Walls Teardom, exhibited at AB6, she explores how bodies, and the womb especially, have been exploited historically and continue to be subjected to control exerted by the medical-legal-industrial complex through today. The work comprises a pink gynaecologist chair and points to medical research conducted on unconsenting enslaved women, such as the series of experiments the Alabama surgeon Dr. J Marion Sims performed on enslaved African women between 1845 and 1849. Rezaire’s examination chair celebrates the contribution of Black women’s wombs in the history of science. According to the artist, nature and the womb are the original technology, yet colonial and capitalist exploitation have caused a disconnection between the body and the self. Sugar Walls Teardom addresses the exclusion of Black women from the dominant narrative of technological progress and the simultaneous exploitation of their bodies for so-called scientific achievements.

Tabita Rezaire is infinity incarnated into an agent of healing, who uses art as a mean to unfold the soul. Her cross-dimensional practices envision network sciences - organic, electronic and spiritual - as healing technologies to serve the shift towards heart consciousness. Navigating digital, corporeal and ancestral memory as sites of struggles, she digs into scientific imaginaries to tackle the pervasive matrix of coloniality and the protocols of energetic misalignments that affect the songs of our body-mind-spirits. Inspired by quantum and cosmic mechanics, Tabita’s work is rooted in time-spaces where technology and spirituality intersect as fertile ground to nourish visions of connection and emancipation. Through screen interfaces and collective offerings, her digital healing and energy streams remind us to access our own inner data center, to bypass western authority and download directly from source. Tabita is based in Cayenne, French Guyana. She has a Bachelor in Economics (Fr) and a Master of Research in Artist Moving Image from Central Saint Martins (Uk). Tabita is a founding member of the artist group NTU, half of the duo Malaxa, and the mother of the energy house SENEB.
