Max Cooper - Cardano Circles

Warning: Contains flashing images Max Cooper: Recently I was asked to make a new live show based around Italy for a festival with that theme, so I delved into some historic Italian music and science for the Seme (Seed) project. One idea I came across was Gerolamo Cardano’s “Cardano Circles” system from around 1570. I love how it continuously turns straight lines into circles (it was part of early printing press technology). I wanted to present variants of this idea and started chatting to animator / coder Mario Carrillo about a video sequence, while I also came up with a musical interpretation. The music was an attempt at a simple beautiful system in line with the basic visual system we were working with. When the music was ready Mario took the visuals into beautiful new realms building on the initial idea, and we chatted a lot about how to connect his various visual systems to the Cardano Circles, and provide lots of opportunity for getting lost in some beautiful emergent abstraction. So yeah, that’s it for this one, I hope you enjoy it, thanks for having a look and a listen as always. Video artist: Mario Carrillo The concept known as “Cardano Circles”, named after the Italian mathematician Gerolamo Cardano, involves arranging circles in a straight line, each at varying angles, and traversing this alignment at different phases. Depending on the number of circles and the phase angle, this mechanism results in circular motion emerging from what would otherwise be linear movement. This simple and yet elegant concept evolved into a visual system designed to explore the aesthetic possibilities inherent in the idea. What if motion and color persist over time, giving rise to new emergent forms? What if varying the phase angle produces shapes beyond circles? And what if these circles were arranged in a grid rather than a Cardano system, numbering in the tens of thousands that swarm new patterns? The sequence unfolds, at times echoing the Cardano motif, to remind us of the foundational structure from which everything stems. Cardano Circles is a fusion of music, technology, and mathematics to craft a captivating abstraction of an age-old mechanical concept. It was a pleasure to work in synergy with Max as we blended our ideas throughout the process — we sincerely hope you find as much joy in experiencing it as we did in creating it.

Peggy Gou - 1+1=11

The video for Peggy Gou’s song 1+1=11 shows artist Olafur Eliasson dancing inside a light installation at his studio in Berlin. As he breakdances – gliding, popping, and moving like a robot – he crosses through beams of light from eight projectors, each of a different hue, unleashing an array of colourful shadows and silhouettes that overlap and cascade across the wall. The artist first began breakdancing as a teenager, an experience he often credits as having inspired his embodied approach to art-making. Gou herself appears in the artist’s studio among the geometric models, lights, and mirrors, holding aloft a polarising disc that becomes alternately transparent and dark as she turns it. The works of Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson are driven by his long-standing interests in perception, movement and embodied experience. Eliasson is internationally-renowned for his public installations that challenge the way we perceive and co-create our environments. Max Cooper - LET THERE BE

Vimeo

Thomas Vanz: "For "Let there Be", Max asked me to think about the two key words "infinite" and "birth of humanity". Everything came naturally to this process I was working on, involving two types of liquids blending in forever, progressively. I choose to represent the light of Kabbalah that Max once told me about, blending a very luminous and pearly white with a very dark black. Once I had a satisfying shot, I added with Max a variety of neolithic paintings and illustrations spreading out from the center where the lights were coming from. The final result represents an infinite light spraying all over darkness, as the birth of reason and mankind." Max Cooper: "I wanted to start the project with the earliest visual example of the infinite I could find reference to - the bright white light of Kabbalah. The magician of liquid systems, Thomas Vanz told me he had a new secret recipe which could deliver what I needed, so I set about scoring to this idea based around what I know of Thomas’ work. The whole project functioned in this way, starting with my written descriptions of each chapter, then finding a visual artist to carry out that side of things, while in parallel I scored the music to the imagined final result. At some point down the line the first visual and musical sketches arrived and things could be refined at each end to marry the music and visual together seamlessly. The music for this chapter needed something with a feeling of grandeur and space, mysteriousness and mysticism. It all came down to some really sparse drawn out chords and plenty of different layers of saturation with pedals (plenty of Metasonix F1, Moogerfooger overdrive, Industrialelctric RM1N, Fairfield Circuitry Meet Maude, WMD Geiger Counter), with smatterings of more distorted hits running through a heavy (Big Sky) plate reverb to punctuate the scale even more. Visually, we complemented Thomas’ growing light animation with ancient cave painting imagery in order to tie the visual abstraction to the human story, and the birth of our yearning for the infinite. For the live show I use two layers of screens to first show the structure hovering in front of stage, then to slowly reveal the rear backlit screen and my position between them, as a means of slowly adding a 3-dimensional depth effect as the music and visual peaks."

Born in 1991, Thomas Vanz is a french director who started making films in 2014, telling tales of the Cosmos's History by producing only practical FX with inks, pigments and many others chemical products. Focused on the macroscopic aspect, he tries first to illustrate a Supernova, blending art and science with his first short "Novae" in 2016, the film is awarded by the quantum festival first prize. In 2017, his second film "Intra" go further by telling the infernal journey of a fall into a black hole, with a real visualisation of what a spinning black hole could look like and an aesthetic vision of the white hole theory. In the meanwhile, he directed "Bright Side", the second clip of the talented composer Darius, for his new album "Utopia", focusing this time about what the birth of the light would look like, and how brightness is defeating the night in the cosmos. In 2019, Atelier Des Lumières, first immersive museum based in Paris, asked him to create an unique piece in a 270° format called "Verse", broadcasted for one year to thousands of visitors.
