Thinkin Home (2020)

Filmed in Jamaica, Thinkin Home tracks the passage of eight young men as they move towards their destination, through lush scenery and the rich chromatics of the built environment. Against a soundscape of reggae, 80s dancehall, gospel and spoken word, we witness a communion. Thinkin Home introduces Essence, the Spring Summer 2021 Menswear and Womenswear Collections and was inspired by Rockers and iconic Jamaican filmmaking. ‘Where is the best place to watch the sunrise? Well, for me, it’s probably my home ‘cause I live on a hill and I love to wake up early in the morning and watch the sunrise before the city becomes what it becomes.’ (Selah Mchale) Made in Collaboration with Saint Models.

Portrait of a Muse

Wales Bonner art directs a video portrait of King Owusu, her model and muse, embodying the spirit of her Spring/Summer 2016 “Malik” collection. Inspired by the story of Malik Ambar, a 16th-century Ethiopian slave who became a military ruler in western India, the collection’s mix of retro tailored denim, white linens and silks, and embellished velvets speaks to a history of cultural exchange between Africa and India. It is the latest chapter in Wales Bonner’s mission to show multifaceted visions of masculinity and blackness in contemporary London and beyond.

Practice: A film by Grace Wales Bonner and Harley Weir

The experimental film, scored by Devonté Hynes, centres on protagonist Leroy Mokgatle, a 17-year-old ballet dancer from Pretoria, South Africa. Collaging dance scenes spanning across Johannesburg and Cape Town, fantasy and reality intertwine as the extremes of discipline are explored through the people we meet along the way.
