Marias - Saint in the Car

"Multimedia artist Cassie McQuater’s video for the melancholy psych track “Saint in the Car” flows through surreal landscapes created from the collaging of sprites taken from video games from the 1970s to the current day. These bizarre worlds, populated by a majority female cast are at once alien, and yet maybe they seem to reflect our own universe through some odd double distorted mirror. The fatalist and semi-abstract lyrical content along with spacious and ethereal sound of the track combine with the visuals to create a dreamy symbolic space open to interpretation or literal reading. Saint in the Car wallows in the darkness in a mode close to apocalyptic but out of death comes rebirth and with it lush green grass." - Northern Transmissions

Love Birds, Night Birds, Devil-Birds

“Love Birds, Night Birds, Devil-Birds” is a nonlinear fairy tale taking the form of an interactive video game installation, and begins as a re-imagining of the surrealist story “The Debutante” by artist Leonora Carrington, in which a young woman exchanges places with a hyena, masked in a suit of human skin, for her societal debut. Extravagant dresses made of anatomical parts, glass, and pink light swirl in pastoral landscapes populated by undulating fluorescent flowers, strange monsters and deconstructed birds, who paint the sky.
