Koo Jeong A : 2O2O

Since the late 1990s, with a belief that ‘nothing is merely ordinary,’ Koo Jeong A has been incorporating ephemeral everyday objects in her works to whimsically interfere in familiar spaces to highlight the poetic aspect of the mundaneness. Composed of disparate mediums—ranging from still and moving images, sound, to smell—Koo’s artworks allow the co-existence of contrasting states such as visibility and invisibility, the imaginary and actuality, and the existence and nonexistence, thus providing possibilities beyond their boundaries. Yuichi Hirako • New Home

“How we interact with nature and how we think about it is very different from a hundred years ago. It will be different a hundred years from now and that’s natural, so I make work considering the changes that will come. I've been working on this subject for a long time.” — Yuichi Hirako Gallery Baton is pleased to announce 《 New Home 》 , a solo exhibition of Yuichi Hirako, from 5th June to 13th July 2024 in the Hannam-dong space, Seoul. Hirako deals with the coexistence and interdependent relationship between nature and humans through his original style of depiction, in which metaphors and symbols stand out. In this second solo exhibition with Gallery Baton, Hirako manifests his interests and particular subjects in richer expression by organically combining painting with sculpture or installation and selectively applying traits of diverse media.

Rusudan Khizanishvili : Velvet Armor

Velvet Armor, a solo exhibition by the Tbilisi, Georgia-born female artist Rusudan Khizanishvili (1979-). Khizanishvili, whose practice is influenced by an array of themes, including architecture, mythology, selfhood, and womanhood, explores the ways in which art connects us to the world beyond our introspective selves. As hinted by the exhibition's title, Velvet Armor — Khizanishvili's Korean debut — stands for the soft yet potent power of women. She veers away from portraying women as solely beautiful and romanticized subjects, a trope often found in pre-modern art. Instead, she vividly expresses their vibrant energy, painting them as strong, occasionally eccentric figures. This emphasis on female strength is a recurring theme in Khizanishvili's work, demonstrating her belief that "armor" is not designed to segregate us from our adversaries but rather to embrace them. Accompanying Khizanishvili's pieces, a work by Saeng Kwang Park (1904-1985) is featured in the exhibition, drawing a parallel between Georgia and Korea. Through Park's vibrant pentachromatic portrayal of Korean folklore and shamanism, Khizanishvili discerns resonances with her practice. The cross-cultural dialogue between the distinctively Korean elements in Park's work and the traditional Georgian context of Khizanishvili's pieces invites contemplation of the convergences among diverse cultures.

Yoon Jongsuk 윤종숙

Yoon Jongsuk is an artist whose paintings are inspired by her memories of landscapes, transformed into abstract representations using narrative elements that she refers to as "mindscapes." Her creative process involves repeatedly applying and wiping away colors, leaving traces of previous iterations, and working on multiple pieces simultaneously over an extended period of time. Her paintings reflect a journey through Eurasia, and they convey a sense of drifting between close and distant horizons, with fragmented motifs that retain an element of ambiguity from her alien past. Emphasizing the flow of motion with a muted color scheme, her brushwork avoids drama and exaggeration, rather suggests meditative harmony through landscape and composition.

Weaving The Light | Artist Kimsooja 김수자

Follow South Korean artist Kimsooja into an underground water reservoir where she “weaves with light” while tapping into East Asian philosophy “reflecting our selves, our fortune, and our universe.” The world of textiles rooted in the handicraft of Korean tradition is at the centre of Kimsooja’s work. When given the possibility of making an installation in a huge underground water cistern full of darkness, she “immediately thought of doing a light project”, she explains, calling it a “light laboratory”. “As I have been doing many projects in relation to sewing and weaving or wrapping, all related to textiles in a way, those questions have been reached to the point that I call my project with the light ‘Weaving the Light’.” For Kimsooja, weaving has a profound meaning related to human existence: “Weaving is in a way breathing, it is living in a way because we don’t stop when we weave as if we breathe. Weaving is constant action, constant evolvement, and constant answer and interaction”. The rays of light dividing into colours have a special meaning in Korean: “For Westerners, you say rainbow colours but equally, we have a word in Korean called ‘obangsek’. “‘O’ means five, ‘bang’ means directionality and ‘sek’ means colour in Korean. So Obangsek means five directional colours “, and the colours represent South, North, East, West, and white as the centre. When using these five colours, Kimsooja reflects water, fire, earth, and air, but also different tastes like sour, bitter, sweet, and the seasons. All in Korean related to Confucianism and Taoism and some part from Buddhism: “East Asian philosophy, that consists of our selves, our fortune, and our universe. That is why I have always been using this colour pattern, not because I particularly like the colours itself, but because of the idea and the concept of it,” she says. Kimsooja’s woven light patterns embrace the idea of the other: “It always indicates the other, because, without the other, we cannot weave. I think it is the nature of life.” Kimsooja (born 1957 in Daegu, South Korea) is a South Korean, multi-disciplinary conceptual artist based in New York, Paris, and Seoul. Her practice combines performance, film, photo, and site-specific installation using textile, light, and sound. Kimsooja's work investigates questions concerning the conditions of humanity, while engaging issues of aesthetics, culture, politics, and the environment. Kimsooja’s work has been shown at major institutions over the world, including MoMA PS1 in 2001, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 2015. She represented Korea for the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. She participated in documenta 14, in Kassel, the ANTIDORON – The EMST Collection in 2017, and has taken part in international biennials and triennials in Busan, Venice Gwangju, Moscow, Istanbul, and Manifesta 1, 1996, among others.
